Proposal: Adding Multitapering Spectral Estimation to scipy.signal

Dear SciPy Development Community,

I regularly work with spectral analysis and frequently use the tools available in scipy.signal. One method I find particularly useful, but currently missing, is multitapering spectral estimation. While the cokelaer/spectrum package provides this functionality, it often presents installation challenges, especially for beginners.

Given that spectrum is licensed under the BSD-3-Clause (compatible with SciPy’s license), I’m considering contributing an implementation of this method directly to scipy.signal. My goal is to improve accessibility and reliability for users who need robust spectral estimation tools.

Questions for the community:

  1. Would this be a valuable addition to SciPy?

  2. Are there any existing plans or ongoing efforts related to multitapering in SciPy?

  3. What would be the good way to include it, being my first time trying to contribute to scipy ?

I’d appreciate your thoughts, guidance, or any relevant resources to help move this forward.
